Hey everyone! I am writing this post from my phone while Millie sunbathes in the grass as a break on our walk. Anyways, let’s get onto some recent vegan eats, leaving off where this post left off! Whoop!
Vegan Doughnut from Cranky Al’s
My sister got me a vegan doughnut from Cranky Al’s. It was my first ever Cranky Al’s doughnut. I’m not the biggest doughnut fanatic but for some reason I am always trying to like them (do you know what I mean? Or have foods like that?).
The reason I don’t love doughnuts is because one time when I was little I ate 8 doughnuts at breakfast at camp (yeah…I ate A LOT as a growing kid) and later that day I got the stomach flu and puked them all up. Doughnuts don’t taste good coming up. Ever since then, I have a weird relationship with them where I like, sort of like them but certain ones make me gag. Good story, I know.
Anyways, I had a vegan Oreo doughnut it was good! Mine was a bit soggy from being out in humidity all day. Next time I’d select plain glazed over Oreo and eat it fresh!
Whole Foods Vegan Raspberry Glazed Doughnut
Okay so I’m not even a doughnut person! But I saw this at Whole Foods as a “new” bakery item and wanted to try it. Here’s my thing: I love trying new vegan products. I’ll try anything vegan once, even if not necessarily my taste.
Sadly, this doughnut was very dense and kinda greasy (ick!). The glaze was good, but super thick and soggy. I only ate about 1/4 if it before my acid reflux revolted and I have the rest to my mom. It’s not bad, I just don’t like greasy things. My favorite MkE vegan doughnut place is still probably Holey Moley. Oh well, still fun to try!
Bean + Guac Tacos:
I made super quick bean tacos a la Trader Joe’s using canned organic pinto refried beans (yum!) that I added nutritional yeast and a little cayenne to, and paired it with Trader Joe’s pre-made spicy chunky guacamole on warmed Corn tortillas with shredded lettuce, and of course, all of the hot sauce.
Paired with salad and Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice medley. Yum. I went back for a third taco after this. And I repeated the same meal the next night! Because leftover beans don’t last long and we had extra tortillas!
Nancy’s Oatmilk Yogurt Bowl
I finally found Nancy’s Oatmilk yogurt! I have been looking for this for a long time with no success (wasn’t at Whole Foods or any other store I’ve been to).
Nancy’s plain unsweetened soy yogurt was my favorite non-dairy yogurt. Sadly, I don’t think they make it anymore since it’s impossible to find and also no longer on their website. So I’ve been looking for the Oatmilk Yogurt for a while now. I found it at Health Hut in Brookfield and audibly said “YAY!” outloud in the aisle of a very small and quiet health food store.
For a snack, I made a bowl with the yogurt, bananas, strawberries, walnuts, and extra drippy salty peanut butter. YUM. I’ve been on a walnut kick lately. So satisfying.
The verdict: good stuff, but I still like the soy better. Unpopular opinion, but I prefer soy milk (and almond milk) to oat milk. Just a personal preference! The yogurt is still good though, don’t get me wrong!
Panera Strawberry Poppyseed Salad
As I mentioned in this post, this is my forever favorite summer salad (sub avocado in place of chicken) I eat it about once a week when I’m home in summer and never tire of it. I had it a couple times the past two weeks.
Once with my friend, Sarah.
And once with my aunt. Scored double bread during this round. Insert praise hands emoji here.
Girl Scout Cookies
I feel like I won the lottery with these! My aunt gifted me a few boxes. Yes, Thin Mints, S’mores, and Lemonades are all #VEGAN!
Also, please peep this letter my mom saved that I apparently wrote in elementary school. It’s like I was born to work in public health:
Cream of Wheat
My kind of comfort food. I add cinnamon and almond milk to mine. Perfect snack on a rainy morning. It’s basically like adult baby food and I love it.
Veggie burgers are often expensive in grocery stores in the NYC area for some reason, so they seem like a special treat to me. I bought a box when they were on sale at Sendiks and have been enjoying them in a variety of ways for lunch. Here’s one very quick lunch example with a microwave-steamed potato + salad. I added guac after the photo which was a MAJOR upgrade.
We bought a box of 12 Honey-White nectarines at Trader Joe’s this week and I’ve been enjoying one for lunch-dessert every day. Yum! Tis the season!
Banza with marinara + roasted peppers + frozen veggies
I love pasta. Banza is still my favorite! I legit prefer the taste/texture over regular and whole wheat pasta. I made a quick upgraded jarred sauce by sautéing onions, garlic, spices, and carrots in a saucepan and then adding the sauce and allowing the flavors to mingle.
Meanwhile, I roasted two red bell peppers in the oven (wrapped in foil) at 500F until charred, removed the skin and seeds, and sliced them). Next I microwaved some peas + frozen Brussels sprouts and boiled the noodles. To finish upgrading the sauce, I stirred in some nutritional yeast. I served it all together with salad. YUM.
I went to Costco with my sister and her husband recently for the very first time in my whole life. After having it hyped up to me for a very very long time, I gotta say, I wasn’t overly impressed (another unpopular opinion). Was not bad, but I honestly think you can get equally as good deals (or better) at Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and/or from Target sales? Am I alone here? Did I do it wrong? Am I missing something?
Anyways, the mangos and watermelon we got from there were delish.
Also from CostCo. These dates are extra good for some reason. These would probably be the sole/main reason I would ever consider a CostCo membership.
Kix with Almond Milk and Freeze-Dried Strawberries
A favorite bedtime snack! Freeze-dried strawberries take it up a friggin’ notch!
Spokes Snacks in Mango-Habenjero
These were an impulse buy because I thought the shape was neat and the flavor sounded good. Also, they had organic banana powder as an ingredient, so naturally I needed to try them.
They are yummy! They taste like Andy Cap’s fries, which is a nostalgic taste for me. I’m not a huge savory snack food person but these were fun and light and crunchy and delightful.
Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies
So yummy in my tummy. Recipe is here.
Almond Milk Froyo
From YoMama (fun fact: I used to work there). Spoiler alert: Millie got some blueberries and raspberries and was very happy about it.
I saw these at Sendiks and had to try them. Verdict: pretty good! Wouldn’t buy again over pink lady, fiji, gala, or opal apples (my favorite varieties), but still fun to mix it up.
Watermelon + more mango
Give me all the frickin’ summer fruit! Also, fruit is best enjoyed outside in the sun, in my opinion.
Polenta with vegan chorizo + roasted veggies + chimicurri
Shout out to my friend Jake for having legit vegan food at his wedding! I was so happy to see such a wonderful friend get married this month, and the food at his wedding was really, really yummy and thoughtful! I have been served a bowl of oily noodles as the “vegan” dish at weddings, so this was lovely.
There was also mini ice cream sandwiches and sorbet! I had three. The lady serving them told me she wasn’t counting ;-). What a great wedding!
I seriously love all my Milwaukee family and friends and am already getting sad at the prospect of leaving this magical place later this summer. Maybe I should just stay forever? Lol..kidding…kind of…
Tofu + Microwave steamed sweet potato + salad
A realistic look at a quick lunch for me. And a very unglamorous photo. #reallife
I was craving this for days and finally made it as a Saturday night activity/snack. I had a handful or so before getting sugared out. So good. My recipe is here, by the way, if you want to make some :-). It’s the best dessert snack to come out of the midwest, as far as I’m concerned.
Chex with almond milk
Gotta use up that extra cereal from the puppy chow somehow, amiright?
On a toast kick with my favorite brand of bread (Angelic Bakery). Been nomming it with peanut butter and bananas for breakfast, and often with guacamole, hummus, and or nutritional yeast + salt for a savory snack. YUM.
I needed veggies the other afternoon and had a later dinner planned, so I had a veggie snack plate of TJ’s cauliflower gnocchi with nutritional yeast + salt, mixed greens, mini bell peppers, carrots, some microwaved frozen veggie mix from Tjs, and guac. Yum.
Risotto made with Banza Rice
YUM. YUM. YUM. That’s all I gotta say.
And yum again with potatoes + veg on the side.
Well, that’s all for now. A peep into my daily eats. Simple, unglamorous, and poorly photographed most of the time. I have a crazy week with some family stuff but am planning at least 3 other posts – including one on supplements which is already drafted, along with a Q&A, and a celery juice post. Whoo!
