The Best Hummus Dressing

I love hummus. Always have and always will. Hummus = yummus. I was that kid being made fun of in first grade for eating my hummus and tomato sandwiches while the rest of the class noshed on ham and cheese. Since then I’ve enjoyed hummus in various forms, including as a base for salad dressing. And here today, I am sharing my favorite vegan hummus dressing recipe, on what is appropriately apparently #NationalHummusDay. Get ready; your salad may not be ready for the flavor explosion coming its way.

Vegan Hummus Dressing

I distinctly recall the very first time I had hummus dressing. It was the night before my Organic Chemistry II Final. I used to have this ritual I engaged in the evenings before Organic Chemistry exams: I’d end my night at the library with a late-night trip to the Union Square Whole Foods salad/hot food bar and load up on whatever tickled my fancy (this is dangerous…I’ve accidentally spent $16-18; be warned!).

On this particular evening, I came across hummus dressing in the dressing section. It immediately caught my eye. What a concept! Hummus dressing?! I was so into the idea.

I proceeded to squirt hummus dressing all over my box of goodies, and proceeded to savor every last hummus dressing-coated bite. It was so savory, nourishing, creamy, and delightful. I was inspired.

Since that fateful night, I’ve played around with my own hummus dressing iterations. I’ve used different flavors of hummus, and mixed and mashed it together with various companions. Today I’m sharing what I consider to be the very best hummus dressing. It is simple, quick to prepare, and packs a flavorful umami punch.

Simple Vegan Hummus Dressing

It pairs nicely with a simple salad of spring greens, and the umami flavor shines even brighter over a hearty roasted vegetable salad. I’ve even used it to top grain salads and Buddha bowls. It’s as versatile as it is easy to prepare.

This recipe comes in extra-handy if you’re out of bottled salad dressing or typical dressing ingredients. Feel free to use your favorite brand or variety of hummus. You can even use a flavored hummus if you’d like. The word is your hummus dressing oyster. Now grab your salad and get excited!

  1. Looks good! I like hummus pasta too. You mentioned your sandwiches in first grade, were you raised vegan?

    1. I was not raised vegan! In fact my mom is an omnivore, as was my father. I went vegetarian in elementary school (like age 8 or so) by choice…I never liked meat and was lactose intolerant, so even before I knew what vegetarianism was I ate mostly plant-based. I went vegan about 5 years ago…maybe I’ll write a story about my journey into plant-based eating and my experience about it!
