Random Eats + Random Thoughts

Hey friends. Happy Thursday.  Thought I would pop in and share some random thoughts and eats lately. I love reading these posts and like writing them too. I hope that by sharing some random snacks and meals I may inspire some yumminess sin your life, should you be looking for new food ideas! At the end, I share a few random thoughts.

Here we go.

Random Eats:

Chex + Almond Milk + a sprinkle of sugar

I love cereal. I go through phases where I’ll eat it daily. These phases tend to be in the summer, with cream-of-wheat and oatmeal phases being more prevalent in the winter/fall months.

Right now I’m on another daily cereal kick. Never in the morning, but always at night as a bedtime snack. With lots of almond milk + a sprinkle of each cinnamon and sugar. So good. Cool, creamy, and crunchy and refreshing. Mmmm.

Also, shout out to toxicology for ruining all rice-based foods for me. I now consume each bowl of Chex cereal cognizant of its arsenic intake and enjoy the crunchy squares with a side dose of paranoia.

So good!! Where has this been all my life?! I also love that the brand supports fair labor practices, as many chocolate companies support slave trade labor.

Animal Crackers Dipped in Peanut Butter

Yes, I eat (vegan) animal crackers. I especially love them dipped in almond milk or peanut butter. Sometimes I pour them in a bowl, fill it with milk, and eat it like cereal. TJ’s Animal Crackers are the best. Wholesome Pantry makes a good version, too. Cinnamon School Book Cookies from Trader Joe’s are another favorite. ALL SO GOOD and crunchy sweet but-not-too-sweet carb options.

Side note: I hear a lot of people talk about sweet snacks/candy as foods they “can’t have in the house” because they have “no control” and will “eat them all.”

You want to know what has worked for me with these foods? Always having them in my house. If I give myself permission to eat them whenever I crave them, then I eat them when I crave them until my tastebuds get bored of them and move on with my day. I don’t eat whole bags/boxes of things anymore. No restrictive mindset = no binging behaviors. This is just what works for me, but if you feel crazy around a certain food, I would suggest giving yourself permission to enjoy it rather than create a weird mental trap around it. After all, i’s just food!

Banachos

Yes yes yes. I always love bananas, but lately I’m on an extra banana kick. Averaging 3-4 a day. Going with it.

Toaster Waffles

Van’s were on sale at the store recently, and I bought some realizing I haven’t had toaster waffles in a minute. I adore toaster waffles, so I was happy to welcome them back into my life.

My fav way to eat is with almond or peanut butter + bananas. I also sometimes like to eat them with avocado + salt, which may sound weird, but really isn’t.

Sweet Potato Wedges Dipped in Guac

If you haven’t had this yet, try it ASAP. Pro tip: Trader Joe’s Spicy Chunky Guacamole and Sabra’s Spicy guacamole are both surprisingly delish premade options.

Teddie Super Chunk Peanut Butter

I got this at my local grocery store because it was on sale and I thought the bear was cute and I have been hooked ever since! This is the crunchiest crunchy peanut butter I’ve ever had. Highly recommend! (though I’ve never seen it in the midwest before…maybe it’s regional? I know the company is based in Massachusetts).

I’m the queen of indecision, so I like making snack plates for dinner. Little bits of salad, other veggies, guac, hummus, pasta, tofu/tempeh, crackers, potatoes (always potatoes) etc. Just pile on everything I have that I’m craving and go for it.

Soy Sauce

Not a food, but lately I love putting it on everything. DAT UMAMI DOE.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Yup. Straight up classic. I like to eat them straight out of the freezer.

Recently I made some nutella-stuffed beauties. Recipe coming soon.

Plain Tofu with Salt

Yup, I’m into it. I came to terms with the fact that I really love plain food recently. I mean obviously I love a lot of flavor-packed foods, but many foods, like tofu, potatoes, raw almonds even toast, cereal – sometimes I just like to eat them plain with salt or a tad of sugar.

ANYTHING DOUGHY = sign me up. Doughy is the best texture. Ever.

And a few random thoughts…

Random Thought #1:

Lately I’ve been feeling very down about myself. For some reason, my self esteem has been really, really low. I feel uncool and icky and weird and gross. I’m frustrated with myself because things have been going well for me lately in terms of typical “accomplishment”-type stuff, so I feel like I should be happy.

I am trying to be more forgiving with myself and work on just being peaceful and present with where I’m at and who I am. I put a lot of pressure on myself, and I know I need to get better at scheduling time to relax. I primarily work from home, so I have a hard time “turning off” from the grind. I’m going to prioritize more time for me (+ Mils) to chills.

Random Thought #2:

I really am into YouTube lately. It’s so easy to go down really bizarre loopholes. I feel like you can learn anything on that platform. Lately I’ve been into Epicurious’s channel. They have a series where they have an expert compare expensive and cheap versions of a food blindfolded and try to identify which is cheap versus expensive. Bon Appetit has a great series where a pastry chef makes gourmet versions of junk foods, candies or snacks. Also, I love Buzzfeed’s Worth It and Sofia Nayard’s bizarre internet haul challenges.

There is also a lot of funny content on YouTube. It’s nice to watch something besides Bravo (my usual go-to) every once in a while.

Random Thought #3:

I’m still frustrated by the plethora of misinformation on “wellness” blogs / Instagram accounts out there. I will never understand how or why people with zero science/health/nutrition background proclaim themselves wellness/health/nutrition experts. I have my master’s in nutrition, and I know I’m not an expert. I still have much to learn and the more I learn the more I realize there is to know.

I am genuinely curious ass to what gives people the confidence to proclaim themselves health and wellness and nutrition experts. While I understand many have good intentions, sometimes they spread dangerous false information to impressionable audiences. Anyways, more on that later.

Random Thought #4:

I love my dog. A lot. I am thankful for her ever day. I never understand when people say things like “oh it’s just a dog,” because my dog is literally my best friend and closest family member!
